The pre-treatment saves you the initial burning so you can use the Dutch Oven directly. It is used over an open fire or with charcoal. The lid with a raised edge allows you to heat the pot from all sides, as charcoal or embers can be placed on top. The lid can be used as a pan which further expands the possible uses. Another well thought-out feature is the thermometer feed through for checking the internal temperature without lifting the lid.
